The wine-making tradition in Corfu dates back many centuries. The Odyssey, written by the Greek poet Homer in the eighth century BC, describes and praises Corfu’s wines, indicating that the island has been producing wine for a long time. This tradition continued over the centuries and reached its peak in the 15th century. During the Venetian era, however, many grapevines were cut down to make way for olive trees, significantly reducing the island’s vineyards and consequently the wine production.
Nowadays, the tradition has been recovered. Locals are proud of their homemade wines which you can order at most taverns and restaurants in small glass jugs. Whenever they are invited to an event, they may bring you a bottle of their family wine as a precious gift.
Corfu wines have a limited production run, typically reaching only a few thousand bottles at most. For this reason, very few of them hit the international market, so it’s easier to find a variety to purchase when visiting wineries for wine tasting in Corfu.
Apart from the purely familiar production, a handful of wineries offer their visitors a glimpse of their premises and a session of wine tasting in Corfu. Pontiglio (Lefkimmi), Nikolouzo Estate (Ano Korakiana), Livadioti (Halikounas), Grammenos (Sinarades), or Theotoky (Liapades) are some of the best-known family vineyards. Some of the grapes they grow are of very old origin, and some are local varieties such as Kakotrygis and Skopelitiko grapes.
After the wine tasting in Corfu, our guests will visit Paleokastritsa Bay, often known as the “Capri” of Greece. Located on the West coast of the island, this is a very popular resort with distinctive natural beauty made up of rocky formations and bays with blue waters. A stop at the Byzantine Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary (16th century) in Paleokastritsa will be provided. There, you can visit the monastery premises and its tiny museum housing notable Byzantine icons and artefacts from early Christian churches.
And, if the heat is on, there’s nothing better than a swim at Saint Spiridon beach!
